Prepare to be taken away by this outstanding first feature film Past Lives by Korean Canadian writer-director Celine Song. The mature adult drama made its debut at Sundance back in January. It already won and been nominated as best film and best film debut at several international film award ceremonies and is now coming to Firstsite Cinema.
Past Lives opens as Nora and Hae Sung, two deeply connected childhood friends, are wrest apart after Nora’s family emigrates from South Korea.
Two decades later, they reunite in New York for one fateful week as they confront notions of destiny, love, and the choices that make a life, in this heartrending modern romance.
Past Lives is ‘an obvious product of exquisite writing (Song also deftly weaves in a careful examination of the immigrant experience that never relies on lazy shortcuts) but also of a raw, hard-to-find chemistry between two actors convincingly reading as 24 and 36’ (★★★★ The Guardian).
