Saturday 23 October 2021 | 7:00 pm

For ten years from the mid 1950s to the middle of 1960s, jazz musician, composer and arranger, Tubby Hayes became a household name in Britain. He had his own shows on national television and he played on some of the most iconic recordings of that era, including the soundtracks to the films ‘Alfie’ and ‘The Italian Job’.
This documentary film ‘Tubby Hayes – A Man in a Hurry’, is narrated by actor Martin Freeman, and charts the life and times of perhaps Britain’s greatest jazz exponent. Looking at his influence on fellow musicians, the UK jazz music scene of the mid-50s to mid-60s, and music in general.

Celebrated British jazz saxophonist Simon Spillett will give a brief introduction to the film, followed afterwards by a live Q&A session in the cinema.
This showing of the film has been organised in partnership with Colchester Arts Centre as part of a weekend celebrating the talents of the late, great Tubby Hayes, featuring a performance by the Simon Spillett Quartet at Colchester Arts Centre on October 24. Find out more
