During her time as Associate Artist with Firstsite’s Learning Team, Nicola Naismith researched the subject of Commerce and Culture, seeking to understand the ways in which artists, arts organisations and commerce can work together and learn from one another. She used a range of research techniques, including conversations with individuals from each of the three sectors, a series of focus groups that explored the perceptions and skills of each sector and a review of existing projects.

Undertaking a residency with award winning architects HAT Projects allowed Nicola to put into practice elements of her research. By observing, documenting and responding to their work environment she produced a limited edition artwork: Office a digitally printed hand cut book / fold / plan. Operating as an employee and corporate gift, the artwork is designed to provoke thinking and questioning about places of work, the activities that take place within them and specifically the ways in which architects move between two and three dimensional forms when designing buildings.
