Can you help keep Firstsite fantastic, fun and free?

The impact of shutting Firstsite has been huge for us and the communities we work with, which is why we are reaching out to you to help us.

Whatever you can give today can help us continue our work, collaborate with more communities and find creative solutions to the world we find in front of us.

Elsa James: Black Girl Essex 28th December 2019

Exhibitions - Behind the Scenes

British African-Caribbean artist, producer and activist Elsa James is the first artist to exhibit and work within Firstsite’s ‘Living Room’. Based in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, Elsa’s work focuses on opinions held towards people of African Caribbean heritage and the stereotyping of Essex women.

Over from June – September 2019 she will use the space to develop new artwork through a programme of open discussions with the black communities in Colchester and Essex.  They will be shown at Firstsite in October 2019, in Super Black, the first exhibition Firstsite organises as part of The Arts Council Collection National Partners Programme, alongside works from the collection curated by people from the local black community of Colchester and Essex.

Film by Aura Films.
