Director: Bo Burnham
Cast: Elsie Fisher, Josh Hamilton, Emily Robinson
Refreshingly uncontrived in plot and with performances that are squirmingly authentic from the young cast, this Sundance hit by comedian Bo Burnham immediately enters the pantheon of teen movies.
Fourteen-year-old Kayla (Elsie Fisher) makes YouTube vlogs in her bedroom, encouraging others to ‘be yourself’. But that’s something she struggles with, voted ‘most quiet’ by her classmates.
We follow her in the last week of class before graduating to high school, as she copes with social media, anxiety and sexuality.
Eighth Grade is one of the few modern films to understand how technology has changed teen life, while also offering timeless truths about the pains of adolescence.
“Eighth Grade isn’t easy, both on screen and in life, but it’s a film that should be a rite of passage for all, no matter the age.” ★★★★ – Guardian
“A deeply kind movie, curious and nonjudgmental even about the characters who in most coming-of-age films would be hissable villains.” – Slate
“The kind of comedy that hipper parents might just be able to watch with their own offspring and enjoy.” – The Hollywood Reporter
