Polina (Anastasia Shevtsova) has the weight of her family’s aspirations upon her. Trying to escape a petty criminal life in Russia, she is on the verge of stardom as a ballet dancer.
But, drawn by a lover and shrugging off the constrictions of classical dance, she flees to France. There, she enrolls in a modern dance troupe and transforms her life.
Sharing a co-directing credit with the film’s choreographer Angelin Preljocaj, Valérie Müller delivers a kinetic film that draws the viewer deeply into the dance. With a hint of Black Swan, this is a vivid story of overcoming physical and emotional boundaries.
“A stylish coming-of-age story” ★★★ – Observer
“A drama that stays on the teasingly austere surface.” – Variety
“If this film’s directors, Valérie Müller and the French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj, don’t offer much overt material on Polina’s inner life, it’s because they don’t have to: the point of Polina, and this movie, is that her dancing is her being.” – The New York Times
