Magda Archer | Problems with Modern Life
Exhibitions: FREE
Problems with Modern Life is a new poster exhibition by artist Magda Archer.
Bursting with colour and a love of typography, Archer’s artworks juxtapose retro and often optimistic imagery with popular words or phrases; mimicking online memes in their combination of words and pictures. Archer’s kitsch artworks are both personal and socio-political, influenced by her own life, vintage advertising and British pop culture. With tongue-in-cheek captions and visual humour, the artworks at first appear cheerful, but upon reflection suggest deeper meanings, hinting at themes of consumerism, social media and current politics.
Magda Archer trained in London at Ravensbourne College of Art, Chelsea School of Art and the Royal College of Art from which she graduated in 1988. Her work has been presented in a number of important group exhibitions. In 2011 Magda had her first solo show ‘Crazy Mad’ at the Cornerhouse, Manchester. Archer was more recently included in the 2018 Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, curated by Grayson Perry.
