Firstsite is delighted be working in partnership with New Contemporaries to be the first gallery to exhibit Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2021, as part of the celebrations for our building’s 10th anniversary year.
New Contemporaries annual exhibition showcases the work of emerging and early career artists. It holds a vital role in giving visibility and recognition to an incredible array of emerging talent, whilst also providing access to development opportunities that enable artists’ practices to become more sustainable long-term. Many of the artists exhibited in past years have become some of the most internationally renowned in recent history.
This year’s selection has been chosen by artists Hew Locke, Tai Shani and Michelle Williams Gamaker, and includes installations, sculptures, films, moving image and video games by 75 new and exciting artists.
From Lydia Pettit’s ‘Trouble in the House’ (2020), a two-metre embroidered fabric glove which explores the experiences of living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, to Noemi Conan’s drawing, ‘Boruta’ (2021), in which a mundane scene from a roadside collides with Polish mythology – explore a diverse selection of creative reflections and responses to living in current times.
Following the exhibition at Firstsite, Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2021 will travel to the South London Gallery, 10 December 2021 – 20 February 2022.
