Urban Sketching Workshop with Nicola Burrell

Friday 10 October 2025 - Saturday 07 February 2026

Studios

Join local artist Nicola Burrell for a fun and active three-hour city walk and sketching session. Explore buildings and street scenes while learning the art skills of composition and texture in this Urban Sketching Workshop with Nicola Burrell.

Nicola Burrell is known for her urban drawings, ‘built up’ paintings and her cardboard creations.

During this session, Nicola will guide you around town to draw and learn the basic skills and things to look for when drawing cityscapes and buildings.

Basic mark making and composition will also be covered including a choice of materials.

Nicola will show you how she finds dramatic perspective in a subject and will show how to accurately set up a composition by measuring and getting the angles correct with a pencil.

You will also have the chance to look at light, shade, textures, materials and details.

If you would like to turn your sketch into a 3D model then you can also join us for the Urban Sketching and 3D Workshop with Nicola Burrell!

Please wear comfortable footwear and dress for the weather. In the event of adverse weather we will stay indoors and display landmarks on screen or work from a different location in the building where there are views of the city.

About the artist:

Nicola Burrell is a Colchester-based artist and sculptor who creates three-dimensional artworks that reflect her fascination with built environments and artificial spaces.

Her creative process often begins with drawing and mapping out various locations, allowing her to capture the essence of concrete buildings and footbridges found in New Towns like Harlow and Basildon.
