Souleymane’s Story

Set over a tense 48 hours, Abou Sangare plays a Guinean asylum seeker in Souleymane’s Story.

Souleymane races through the streets of Paris delivering food as he awaits his asylum interview which will decide whether or not he will be granted residency.

Behind the quiet tension on his face lies a life marked by struggle, resilience, and survival. Working as a food delivery cyclist without official papers, he rents another person’s account just to make ends meet, navigating a precarious system built on exploitation and secrecy.

As Souleymane prepares for his asylum interview, he must learn and memorise a fabricated life story — one that paints him as a political refugee fleeing persecution. But holding on to the truth while performing a lie proves more difficult than he imagined.

A moving and deeply human portrait of displacement, dignity, and hope, Souleymane’s Story offers a powerful glimpse into the unseen lives of those fighting for a place to call home.

‘Souleymane’s Story, an intimate, handsome rendering of his troubles, serves as both his aching statement and a biting critique of an unjust immigration system.’ – RogerEbert ★★★⯪
