Newly married couple Juliette and a ship captain Jean struggle through marriage as they travel on the L’Atalante along with the captain’s first mate Le père Jules and a cabin boy.
Jean Vigo’s 1934 classic L’Atalante, his only full-length feature, is a poetic and dreamlike exploration of love, marriage and life along the waterways.
The film follows Juliette (Dita Parlo) and her husband Jean (Jean Dasté), a barge captain, as they embark on their honeymoon aboard his boat, L’Atalante.
Confined yet surprisingly expansive, the vessel becomes a stage for the couple’s evolving relationship, coloured by playfulness, surreal moments and unexpected encounters with the eccentric Père Jules (Michel Simon).
Shot by Boris Kaufman, the film combines delicate simplicity with technical mastery, offering striking, dreamlike images that continue to influence cinema today.
‘Cinematographer Boris Kaufman captures unforgettable, dream-like images. L’Atalante manages to be more modern than anything being made today.’ – The Guardian ★★★★★
