A Celebration of empowerment and inclusion

For CNS, the experience begins with the people.

“Firstsite’s staff are consistently energetic, welcoming and genuinely helpful, and that warmth sets the tone for everything we do here.”

That sense of welcome is an important part of what makes Firstsite a natural home for community events. Alongside the venue’s facilities and flexible spaces, the team works closely with organisers to help events run smoothly – from the initial planning conversations through to the day itself.

For CNS, that relationship has developed over many years.

“Working with the Firstsite team has been a genuinely positive experience from the outset. The staff are engaging, cooperative and deeply committed to making every event a success.”

The organisation also highlighted the team’s willingness to respond to the unexpected, including accommodating last-minute requests and finding practical solutions when challenges arise.
That flexibility can make a significant difference for community organisations, where events can evolve right up until the day.

Spaces designed for different kinds of gatherings

CNS’s programme demonstrates just how varied community events can be.

The organisation regularly makes use of different areas of Firstsite depending on the nature and scale of each occasion. The Cinema provides a setting for larger presentations, meetings and screenings, while the Studios offer flexible space for celebrations, seminars and community gatherings. Meeting Rooms provide a practical environment for committee meetings, with media facilities available to support presentations and discussions.

For larger outdoor occasions, Berryfield and D lawns provide another option, allowing events to extend beyond the building and into the surrounding space.

This flexibility is particularly valuable to an organisation like CNS, whose events range from intimate meetings to large-scale celebrations.

“Firstsite’s ethos and environment make it our venue of choice for every occasion. It truly is a space for everyone.”

Celebrating culture and bringing communities together

At the heart of CNS’s programme is a desire to create opportunities for people to come together.

Its events include cultural celebrations such as Deepawali: Celebration of Light, community BBQs and the Festival of Rice and Spice, alongside seminars and awareness events addressing important issues such as bowel, testicular, cervical and lung cancer.

The organisation also hosts its Annual General Meeting at Firstsite, as well as events including its “Bridging the World Through Shared Experiences: Inspiring the Next Generation” programme.

Together, these events demonstrate how a single community organisation can use a venue for many different purposes – from celebration and cultural exchange to learning, discussion and social connection.

For CNS, the purpose behind each event is just as important as the event itself.

“We hope to foster a sense of closeness, belonging and joy within our community.”

A place to connect with Colchester

Firstsite’s location in the heart of Colchester is another important part of the experience for CNS.

Being centrally located means members can walk to the venue from the town centre, helping to make participation easier and removing some of the practical barriers that can prevent people from attending community events.

“Firstsite’s central location in the heart of Colchester makes it wonderfully accessible. Members can walk in from the town centre, removing barriers and encouraging participation.”

But accessibility isn’t only about location. For CNS, it is also about how people feel when they arrive.

The organisation describes the atmosphere created by the Firstsite team as warm and welcoming, helping attendees feel comfortable and encouraging people to participate.

It is this combination of accessibility, flexibility and atmosphere that CNS feels helps its events have a lasting impact.

Supporting events with purpose

Firstsite’s commitment to community, creativity and inclusion is closely aligned with the work of CNS.

The Society describes Firstsite’s ethos as “creative, open and inclusive”, reflecting the values that underpin its own community-focused programme.

That shared approach means the relationship goes beyond simply providing a room for an event. The Firstsite team works alongside organisers to help them realise their plans and find solutions that work for their particular event.

CNS particularly remembers occasions where the team has gone the extra mile to help make an event possible. One example involved Firstsite’s Operations Manager sourcing and fitting specialist hooks and metal stands so the organisation’s large banners could be displayed properly.

“These are not small gestures; they require real initiative and effort.”

For CNS, those practical details contribute to a wider sense of partnership – knowing there is a team behind the venue who cares about the success of the event.

From seminars to celebrations

Asked about their favourite events to run at Firstsite, CNS found it difficult to choose just one.

Among the organisation’s most cherished events are its Senior Citizens Seminars, the “Bridging the World Through Shared Experiences” programme and its AGM in the Cinema. The opportunity to screen films for the community is also particularly valued, alongside New Year celebrations in the Studios.

Then there are the larger community occasions – including the Festival of Rice and Spice and community BBQs on the lawns – which capture the celebratory spirit of the organisation.

Looking ahead, CNS has another busy programme planned, with community, cultural and awareness events continuing throughout the year.

From conversations and committee meetings to cultural celebrations and large community gatherings, its programme is a reminder that events can serve many different purposes – and that the right venue can help bring all of them to life.

A space for community

For Firstsite, working with organisations such as Colchester Nepalese Society is an important part of what makes the building more than simply an events venue.

Community events create opportunities for people to meet, celebrate their identities and cultures, exchange ideas and build relationships. They bring new audiences into the building and contribute to the sense of Firstsite as a place that belongs to everyone.

For CNS, that sense of belonging is central to its experience of the venue.

“Without Firstsite’s generosity, including the use of its outstanding facilities entirely free of charge, our organisation simply could not function as effectively as it does. We are deeply grateful.”

We are delighted to continue supporting Colchester Nepalese Society and the many communities they bring together through their programme of events.

Their long-standing relationship with Firstsite demonstrates what can happen when a venue and an organisation share a commitment to creating welcoming spaces where people can connect, celebrate and feel they belong.
