Create Your Own Monochrome Painting Inspired by Tamara de Lempicka
Sunday 09 August 2026
Explore monochrome oil painting and stylised portraiture in this workshop inspired by Self-Portrait in the Green Bugatti by Tamara de Lempicka.
During the workshop, participants will be introduced to monochrome painting techniques and the distinctive visual style of Tamara de Lempicka’s portraiture.
Using a single colour and white oil paint, attendees will learn how to create depth, structure, and atmosphere through tonal value rather than detailed colour mixing.
Through guided demonstrations, participants will explore how to mix a tonal range, simplify facial features into bold shapes, and use light and shadow to build form within a portrait.
Attendees will then be guided step-by-step through creating their own monochrome self-portrait on canvas using oil paints.
The session concludes with a group reflection and discussion exploring tone, stylisation, and the creative possibilities of working with a limited palette.
Participants will leave with a completed monochrome self-portrait painting and a stronger understanding of tonal painting, portrait structure, and Art Deco-inspired oil painting techniques.
Basic materials provided. Food and drink is also available for purchase throughout the session from our cafés.
This workshop is suitable for ages 16+.

What is Art Deco?
Art Deco is a visual style known for bold shapes, dramatic lighting, smooth surfaces, and elegant stylisation.
Often associated with luxury, fashion, and modernity, Art Deco portraiture simplifies form into striking geometric shapes and strong contrasts, creating polished and sculptural compositions.
