Angela’s deafness raises concerns during her pregnancy regarding connecting with her daughter. Post-delivery, partner Héctor supports her as she learns to mother in a society lacking adequate accommodations for the hearing-impaired.
Professional potter Angela is deaf and lives contentedly with her husband Hector, a hearing man. At the height of their happy life, Angela discovers she is expecting a baby!
But tensions start to appear when her mother implies that she would rather the couple not have children, due to Angela’s deafness.
Everything truly shifts when baby Ona is born and can hear. The family soon find themselves navigating misunderstandings and disagreements.
With the film’s sound expertly crafted to help us experience life through Angela’s ears, Deaf takes us on an empathetic journey of motherhood, love and life.
‘The film becomes a bang-on illustration of how cinema can be an engine for empathy, and certainly viewers won’t need to be deaf themselves to get what Angela is going through.’ The Guardian ★★★★☆
