‘Imagine you are driving a yellow car’, (2004) and ‘Imagine you are driving a blue Honda.’ (2004) are life-size automobile sculptures by Julian Opie.
The sculptures are stylised models of cars constructed from aluminium and coated with paint and vinyl. They belong to a series of sculptures based on representations of subjects in the everyday world, which Opie began making in the mid-1990s. These include buildings such as churches, offices and towers, as well as trees and, later, animals and people.
Julian Opie’s (born 1958, London) work is known throughout the world, with public commissions from New York to Seoul, London to Zurich, and an uninterrupted flow of international museum exhibitions.
Opie’s distinctive formal language is instantly recognisable and reflects his artistic preoccupation with the idea of representation and the means by which images are perceived and understood. Exploring different techniques both cutting edge and ancient, Opie plays with ways of seeing through reinterpreting the vocabulary of everyday life. His style evokes both a visual and spatial experience of the world around us.
