The Art of the Space Race (Lecture by Steve Carroll) – 2:30pm – 3:30pm – Cinema

Most revolutions in philosophy, science or technology like the Renaissance, Enlightenment, and the Industrial Revolution have an impact upon art.

So why has the Space Race and resultant moon landings – among the greatest achievements of humanity – had so little influence on the arts beyond popular culture?

Art History tutor, Steve Carroll, suggests why discoveries in the Cosmos had so little effect upon 20th century art. The lecture also discovers some hidden gems, especially from Russia.

The lecture considers painting, poetry, literature and cinema, concluding with the work of contemporary female artists exploring this theme today.

About the Lecturer

Steve Carroll is an Art and Art History tutor who is fascinated by the less obvious areas of Art History, and the interesting links that can be made between artists of different periods.

He has been teaching for the last 20 years and worked for 40 years in the graphic design industry, from which he has now retired. Steve is also a multi award winning artist.

He is married with two married sons, the youngest of which is a professional artist and the oldest is a rocket scientist working for the University of Sussex.

His interest in the Space Race started as a small child following the NASA missions to the moon. He is about to publish his first science fiction novel on Kindle.

Another of his passions is working for a charity in Kolkata, India. This charity educates street children and gives them training for the future.
