Lords of Chaos chronicles the inception of the infamous Norwegian Black Metal scene. More than a musical movement, it eventually led to a string of church burnings and grisly murders.
The film follows the members of the genre’s pivotal band Mayhem, as they create a way of life focused on total nihilism and satan worship (while still needing to borrow their parents’ cars to get to gigs).
Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, himself a member of the scene, this has a grisly authenticity, but also a clear eye on the Spinal Tap self-seriousness of these young men, resulting in a unique blend of horror and comedy.
“Frequently unpleasant but oddly compelling – not least because Åkerlund ensures that the film never takes itself as seriously as its subjects did.” – IndieWire
“Lords of Chaos provokes both awe and repulsion, but not necessarily admiration for a musical form and subculture unwaveringly devoted to literalism, no matter how extreme.” – The Hollywood Reporter
