YAK Story – Malachi
Thanks to our supporters, Malachi has found a free, welcoming space to be creative and connect with others – without the barrier of cost or limited living space.
Malachi joined YAK only very recently, looking for a free, welcoming space to meet people their age and be creative. They had been struggling to find social groups for people aged 18+ that didn’t have an entry fee and felt accessible.
Living in supported housing means Malachi’s living space is very small and only fits the essentials. “I can’t afford classes or other groups,” they explain, which made it hard to explore creativity or meet people before joining YAK.
Finding like-minded people
Even in their first two sessions, Malachi has already made connections. “I enjoyed meeting people and making connections with like-minded people my age,” they say. “I have already made friends in only two sessions.”
YAK offers the freedom to take part in group activities or work independently, helping Malachi feel comfortable in the space from the start. “Everyone is so lovely,” they say, “it’s very difficult to be nervous.”

Trying new things
Since joining YAK, Malachi has already started experimenting with new materials and techniques they wouldn’t normally have access to. They were given a sketchbook in their first session, which they’ve since used to start longer-term art projects.
They’ve also taken part in a special workshop at the Makerspace with YAK — an experience that encouraged them to join the space independently and continue exploring new creative opportunities.
"I have already tried new mediums/techniques I wouldn’t have otherwise. There is freedom to take part in group activities or explore ideas on my own."
Looking ahead
YAK has already had a positive impact on Malachi’s confidence. They describe struggling with anxiety and low self-esteem, but feeling safe and supported in the group.
Looking ahead, Malachi is excited to keep building connections and developing relationships within YAK. As they describe it: “YAK is a welcoming space to exist without censoring yourself.”
