Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream no one respects, goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness in Marty Supreme.
Directed by Josh Safdie, Marty Supreme is a frenetic, darkly comic character study set in early 1950s New York and beyond.
Timothée Chalamet stars as Marty Mauser, a fast-talking shoe shop worker with outsized ambition, questionable ethics and dreams of domination in the emerging world of competitive table tennis.
Loosely inspired by real-life hustler and champion Marty Reisman, Marty’s rise is fuelled by gambling, self-promotion and sheer force of personality rather than discipline or tradition.
As Marty chases fame and financial backing, his journey takes him from New York to Britain and back again, colliding with rival players, dubious sponsors and a series of chaotic personal entanglements.
Along the way, relationships strain, obsessions deepen and the boundaries between sport, performance and spectacle blur.
‘There’s a giddy messiness and electrifying volatility to the crazed plotting..’ – Empire ★★★★★
