Join us for the premiere of 12 Months in Essex, a film documenting a year of work in the studio of artist Simon Carter.
Simon is a painter of the Essex coastal landscape with a studio in Frinton. His work is held in collections in the UK, USA and China.
He co-founded the artist collective Contemporary British Painting and the East Contemporary Art Collection, the first dedicated collection of contemporary art for the East of England which is housed at the University of Suffolk, Ipswich.
He is President of Colchester Art Society and has been Artist-in-residence at the University of Essex and Firstsite, Colchester.
Noah Carter is Simon’s youngest son. He is an artist and filmmaker who specialises in making documentaries about the visual arts and has been recording Simon in his studio, on and off, for the last 15 years.
In 12 Months in Essex, Simon and Noah met once a month over a period of 12 months to record what was going on with Simon’s work. They met at 7am at Beaumont Quay, filming in the landscape from which Simon draws and then later in the studio.
They set up the cameras each day and left them running, observing Simon’s working practice and the digressions of studio work.
The film features an original soundtrack by Karl Bielik, artist, director of Terrace Gallery and founder of the band Lark.
