An Introduction to Abstract Drawing & Monoprint
Saturday 28 February 2026
Explore spontaneous abstract mark-making and simple monotype printing techniques using an etching press with An Introduction to Abstract Drawing & Monoprint.
These approaches focus on expressive lines, textures and gestures to communicate feeling rather than realistic detail. Alongside this, you will learn the basics of monotype printing, a printmaking method that produces one-of-a-kind images by applying ink to a surface and transferring it through an etching press.
The session begins with playful drawing exercises that encourage instinctive movement and experimentation. Using a range of objects and materials, you will create a series of abstract studies that explore rhythm, pressure and texture.
You will then be guided through simple monotype printing techniques, discovering how everyday items and surfaces can create bold effects.
By the end of the workshop, you will bring these skills together to produce a final abstract artwork that celebrates your individual style.
Basic materials provided. Food and drink is also available for purchase throughout the session from our cafes. This workshop is suitable for ages 14+.

What is Mark-making and Monotype Printing?
Mark-making refers to the expressive lines, shapes and textures created through drawing. It focuses on gesture and emotion rather than accuracy, allowing artists to communicate mood and movement.
Monotype printing is a printmaking process that produces a single, unique image. Ink is applied to a smooth surface and transferred to paper via pressure from an etching press, creating bold, textured results that cannot be exactly reproduced.
About your tutor
Mel Perkins graduated with a Fine Arts degree from Derby University in 2019. Based in Suffolk as an artist at Old Jet, Mel is developing her multidisciplinary practice, focusing mainly on photography, painting and sculpture. Describing making art as a ‘bodily and intrinsic process’, Mel works instinctively.
Materiality is as fundamental to her practice as theme and subject matter, and she explores each in depth. Sometimes she also adds handwritten notes and musings, in order to bring an aspect of humanity back into her works.
