Have we become a nation of strangers? In Dragonfly, neglected pensioner Elsie (Brenda Blethyn) finds an unexpected ally in her younger neighbour Colleen (Andrea Riseborough).

Over time, Elsie gains a friend and the troubled Colleen finds a fresh purpose in life as she shops, cleans and cares for her. It brings brighter days for both of them.

Elsie’s son John (Jason Watkins) resents the way that Colleen has selflessly fulfilled the responsibilities that he has shirked. Simmering tensions bring shocking consequences in a gripping human story straight from the heart of broken Britain.

A powerful return to the cinema from London to Brighton director Paul Andrew Williams that showcases heartrending, award-winning performances from Brenda Blethyn and Andrea Riseborough.

Thu 18 Dec: Join us for a Q&A with the Director of Dragonfly!

Paul Andrew Williams is an award-winning British filmmaker known for his bold, character-driven storytelling. He began his career as an actor before moving into writing and directing music promos, viral campaigns and short films.

His 2001 short Royalty, which screened at the London Film Festival and BAFTA, became the foundation for his acclaimed debut feature London to Brighton.

Paul says:

‘I wrote Dragonfly during the pandemic. An idea that was originally born out of never being able to film large groups of actors again. During the writing it slowly dawned on my that that isolation and loneliness that the lockdown restrictions created are something that was there already for so many of us.

We all need companionship and I felt that the relationship between Elsie and Colleen was an antidote to that loneliness.’
