Hire the Berryfield Lawn at Firstsite: Get your summer out!

Written by Jess, Sales & Events Coordinator

From community celebrations and cultural festivals to private parties and relaxed gatherings, Berryfield Lawn offers a versatile outdoor space for events of all shapes and sizes.

With flexible layouts, picturesque surroundings and the added benefit of being located alongside the gallery, the lawn provides a unique setting where people can come together, celebrate and create memorable experiences.

Where garden parties, community events and festivals come to life.

From festivals to food celebrations

When I first began working with events on Berryfield Lawn, my experience was shaped by large festivals and community celebrations, each with ambitious programmes and complex logistical requirements.

Ranging from vibrant festivals of light, where crowds gathered to celebrate with colour and creativity, to food-focused events showcasing a range of cultural cuisines.

A celebration of community: Colchester Pride

One of the highlights was working alongside Colchester Pride.

This event represented everything a great event should be: a meaningful cause, a welcoming atmosphere and a space where people could connect, celebrate and feel part of a community.

The event featured a main stage, an incredible variety of stalls, indoor talks and plenty of opportunities for people to get involved.

It demonstrated just how powerful events can be when they bring people together around a shared purpose.

A different perspective on the space

For a long time, I saw Berryfield Lawn as the setting for those big, flagship moments. The festivals and large-scale events that require months of planning and coordination.

Then we received an enquiry from someone who simply wanted to enjoy paella with a few friends to celebrate a special occasion. It was such a straightforward request, but it completely changed the way I thought about the space.

Flexible spaces for every occasion

What became clear is that Berryfield Lawn doesn’t need to be reserved solely for major festivals. The lawn can be used in sections and adapted for a huge variety of event types.

Whether it’s a relaxed picnic, a private celebration, a community gathering, or an event with room to grow over time, the flexibility of the space allows organisers to create something that suits their needs.

Better still, outdoor events benefit from being located alongside the gallery, giving guests access to free exhibitions and adding another layer of value to the overall experience.

Making the most of the landscape

Paying attention to the natural shape and topography of the land can unlock exciting possibilities.

An example of this is the central balcony, which can become a ready-made stage, while the surrounding grounds naturally create distinct areas for activities, performances, food or relaxation.

Planning for the Great British weather

Of course, hosting an outdoor event comes with a few practical considerations.

As anyone who has spent more than five minutes in England knows, the weather forecast is often less of a prediction and more of a creative suggestion.

That’s why we have a dedicated outdoor events FAQ and always recommend planning a suitable wet-weather contingency.

Sunshine is wonderful; having a backup plan is even better.

Creating safe and successful events

Careful planning around the elements and key health and safety measures, including medical assistance and fire safety provisions, is an essential part of outdoor events.

To help ensure every event runs smoothly, we have a list of recommended suppliers such as professional caterers, DJs, bouncy castles and event specialists.

For organisers, it provides confidence that their event is being delivered safely and professionally. For attendees, it helps create an environment where they can focus on enjoying the experience.

Ultimately, good event planning isn’t just about what people see on the day; it’s about creating a safe, welcoming and reliable experience for everyone involved.

Bringing your ideas to life

Whether you’re planning a large community festival, a cultural celebration, a private gathering, or simply an afternoon with friends, Berryfield Lawn offers a unique outdoor setting with the flexibility to bring your ideas to life.
