Vanley Burke is often described as the ‘Godfather of Black British Photography’.

His iconic images have captured the evolving cultural landscape and social change, in the UK over the past four decades. He is also an avid collector of material that provides invaluable insights into Britain’s African and Caribbean communities.

In this film, Vanley discusses objects from his vast archive that featured in Firstsite’s 2019 exhibitions ‘Elsa James: Black Girl Essex’ and ‘Super Black’, revealing their significance to Britain’s Caribbean communities.

As part of ‘Super Black: Online Festival’ – a celebration of African and Caribbean history and culture in Britain.
