Description
Celebrate the season with this Colchester Castle in the Snow A3 print by Wisdom Design — a festive tribute to our historic city.
Set against a wintry backdrop, the artwork captures Colchester Castle, one of the city’s landmarks.
Built soon after the Norman Conquest on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius, it remains the largest Norman keep in Europe, Â built to the same design as the Tower of London, enlarged to use the entirety of its Roman foundations. Throughout the years, Colchester Castle was besieged by King John in 1216, was the headquarters of Witchfinder General Matthew Hopkins, was the site of the execution of Royalist generals Sir Charles Lucas and Sir George Lisle, and was partially demolished in the 17th century. In 1815, a sycamore tree was planted atop the castle to celebrate the Battle of Waterloo.
A beautiful piece of local art that brings both history and festive charm to any home.
