Set on the remote island of Carpathia, The Legend of Ochi follows Yuri (Helena Zengel), the daughter of Maxim (Willem Dafoe), who is part of a group of young soldiers on the hunts for the colourful, high-pitched creatures known as Ochi.
Yuri, largely overlooked by her father, discovers a baby Ochi caught in a trap and decides to rescue it.
When she realizes she can communicate with the creature, she sets out on a journey to return it to its mother, unbeknown to her father.
Along the way, Yuri faces challenges from her father’s hunting party while navigating her fractured family life and the wider island community. She embarks on an adventure that transforms her understanding of the world around her.
‘The Legend of Ochi reminded me of how wonderful it can be to see an artist distilling the fiction that changed him into a new vision for another generation, passing down the inspiration from a sort of cinematic parent to child.’ RogerEbert ★★★☆
