Holly's story
The Young Art Kommunity (YAK) programme at Firstsite has had a transformative impact on Holly, providing them with creative space, confidence, and a supportive community at a crucial stage in their development as a young artist.
As Holly describes it, YAK is “a creative, fun place, where you yap about anything, eat anything (good snacks!) and can create anything you want!”

Malachi joined YAK looking for a free, welcoming space to meet people their age and be creative. They had been struggling to find social groups for people aged 18+ that didn’t have an entry fee and felt accessible.
Living in supported housing means Malachi’s living space is very small and only fits the essentials.
“I can’t afford classes or other groups,” they explain, which made it hard to explore creativity or meet people before joining YAK.

“I felt very isolated and didn’t know what my next steps would be,” she explains. “I couldn’t find the help that I needed to progress with my art.”
